✦ Synopsis

Synthesis of v e r a t r i d i n e labeled with tritium on t h e aromatic residue a t p o s i t i o n 5' i s described. F i r s t , a precursor bromoveratridine, 3-(5-bromoveratroyl) veracevine, was prepared which was converted i n t o t h e labeled v e r a t r i d i n e by cata l y t i c dehalogenation employing t r i t i u m gas. i n t h e l a s t s t e p of t h e s y n t h e s i s so t h a t handling of labeled intermediates could be avoided. Veratridine w a s obtained with 4.48 Ci/mmole s p e c i f i c a c t i v i t y and with 97% radiochemical p u r i t y .
