β¦ Synopsis
Acylperoxynitrates (R-C-OONO2) are known constituents of photochemical smog'). These compounds are supposed to be formed from acylperoxy radicals and NO2. Although alkylperoxy radicals undoubtedly play an important role in photochemical smog formation 2) and gasphase reaction of these radicals with NO2 seems likely 3) , alkyl peroxynitrates (I) have thus far not been detected in photochemical smog. From the investigations of Lachowicz 4) and ourselves') we learned that fl-nitroalkyl peroxynitrates are relatively stable compounds,Considering this it seemed worthwhile to try to synthesize some simple alkyl peroxynitrates by reaction of the alkylhydroperoxides with N205: ROOH + N205 -R-O-O-NO2

It is shown that in the combustion (between 270Β°C and 400Β°C) of methyl isopropyl ketone and methyl t-butyl ketone (pinacolone) there was ready abstraction of a hydrogen atom from the methyl group. Oxidation then followed by the two mechanisms already reported 3 for acetone and methyl ethyl ketone.
