PYRROLINE-2,5-DIONE-5-'4C The C-glycosyl nucleoside antibiotic, showdomycin, was first isolated from the culture filtrate o f Streptomyces shawdoensis by Nishimura f i . l r 2 ) o f our laboratory. O n the basis o f spectroscopic studies, chemical transformations, and X-ray crystallographic examination,

showdomycin was confirmed to be 2-(P-D-ribofuronosyl)ma~eimide3) (I). The antibiotic i nhibited growth of several Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria') and was particularly active against Streptococcus haemolyticus. As the compound showed significant antibacterial and a n t i t u m ~r ~~~~) activities, i t was the subject of numerous biochemical studies .6) Hatanaka reported that showdomycin showed excellent radiopotentiating activity7) against Ehrlich
