โœฆ Synopsis

The primary photodissociation of dibenzyl ketone (DBK) to form the benzyl radical is examined by picosecond transient absorption (PTA) spectroscopy. This initial process precedes decarbonylation of the phenacetyl radical. Dissociation is initiated at 282 nm in solutions of methanol and cyclohexane and PTA is measured over the 324-304 nm region using a pump-probe configuration based on two dye lasers synchmnously pumped by a Q-switched Nd: YAG laser. The PTA spectra of the benzyl radical and ofthe excited singlet state (S, ) of DBK, the population of which precedes dissociation, are measured in both solvents. The z 2 ns time constants associated with the S, DBK decay and the benzyl radical formation establish the direct kinetic relationship between these two transients.
