## Abstract The synthesis of heterocyclic α‐mercapto acids starting from (__RS__)‐thiomalic acid using hexafluoroacetone as protecting and activating agent is described. The new compounds are useful building blocks for peptide and depsipeptide modification as well as for drug design.
