The gene encoding pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) offers an interesting model system to study negative control of transcription in eucaryotes. Indeed, glucocorticoid hormones specifically inhibit transcription of the POMC gene in the anterior pituitary. The POMC gene is predominantly expressed in the an
