✦ Synopsis

Sitvm atoms isolated in noble gas matrices show fiuorescence specta with large Stokes sfrifts, when optΓ&y excited via the SP ~5s transition which is three-fold splii in tfte matix by spin-orbit and crystal field uiteraction. The shirts afe explained by the fortnation ofan excΓ―merΓ―c bond between tlxe excited metal atom and the notile gas ca&.. For Ag in Kr it is demonstrated, tfiat most of the Stokes shift arises from t&e grctund state reptdsion.

Based on data recently published for Ag.
