## Abstract A novel planar‐reconfigurable dipole antenna on ungrounded dielectric slab with parasitic reflector which has dual‐band and steerable endfire pattern characteristics, is proposed. A prototype is fabricated and both simulated and measured results validate the advantages of this antenna.

✦ Synopsis
An antenna capable of operation in two frequency bands allocated for cellular telephony is designed. The antenna consists of a dual meander and two passi¨e ground-attached metallic strips. The antenna is similar to a strip-slee¨e monopole in its construction and wideband operation in the proximity of the human head. The main ad¨antage of this antenna is its shorter length. Two ¨ersions of the design ( ) are characterized in terms of the input impedance normalized to 50 ⍀ and radiation pattern in free space and next to the human head model. Also, the power deposition in the head is e¨aluated. The o¨erall perfor-( ) mance shows low reflections in both frequency bands VSWR -1.5 and power deposition below the prescribed safety limits.

A dual-frequency strip-slee¨e monopole antenna for mobile handheld units has been designed that operates in both frequency bands allocated for wireless communication. The bandwidth of the antenna is 19.3 and 11.2% for AMPS and PCS bands, respecti¨ely with VSWR F 2. These bandwidths are practically u
