✦ Synopsis

Some early steps in the development of an inter-disciplinary Mechatronics curriculum at the Ohio State University are described. More specifically, this paper reports on the mid-course results of an undergraduate curriculum development grant funded by the National Science Foundation* Division of Undergraduate Education, and managed by the authors of this paper. The aim of the grant is to foster the development of an inter-departmental, inter-disciplinary curriculum in Mechatronics. The specific effort described in this paper represents only a part of the educational and research activities in the field of electro-mechanical systems at the Ohio State University.

In this paper, problems related to the integrated design of observer based fault detection systems are addressed. In the context of norm based residual evaluation, a trade-off between false alarm rate (FAR) and fault detection rate (FDR) is first formulated. Aiming at minimizing FAR under given FDR,
