Abstract
Liquid secondary ion mass spectra of choline and acetylcholine halides exhibit several series of cluster ions whose origins were investigated using B/E and B^2^/E linkedβscan techniques. In the case of choline halides three series of cluster ions were identified as (Me~3~\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ + $\end{document}CH~2~CH~2~OH + __n__M), (Me~3~\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ + $\end{document}CH~2~CH~2~OMe + __n__M) and (Me~3~N\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ + $\end{document}CH~2~CH~2~OH Β· Me~3~\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ + $\end{document}CH~2~CH~2~O^β^ + __n__M), while (CH~3~COOCH~2~CH~2~\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ + $\end{document}Me~3~ + __n__M), (Me~3~\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ + $\end{document}CH~2~CH~2~OH + __n__M) and (CH~2~ = CH\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ + $\end{document}Me~3~ + __n__M) were observed in the spectra of acetylcholine halides. For these cluster ions, bimolecular reactions induced on ion bombardment under secondary ion mass spectrometric conditions are discussed.

A new approach is reported for secondary-ion time-of-Γight mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) sample preparation. The method involves the use of halide additives or halide modiΓcation of silver substrate surfaces to promote analyte cationization and protonation. The enhancement of signal intensity has bee
