โœฆ Synopsis

The number of sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) per metaphase was determined in normal human lymphocytes by the Hoechst-Giemsa procedure. The addition of inorganic trivalent arsenic (Na2HAsO4) 10-6M and 2 x 10-6M induces a significant and dose-dependent increase of SCE. This phenomenon is as sensitive as the evidence of arsenic-induced chromosomal aberrations in vitro.

An elevated sister chromatid exchange (SCE) rate was found in the lymphocytes of six patients treated with arsenic. All had stigmata of arsenic use as well as biopsy-proven skin cancers. The arsenic exposed patients had a mean of 14.00 SCE/mitosis while 44 normal controls had a mean of 5.8 SCE/ mito

## Abstract The utility of the sister chromatid exchange (SCE) assay for human population studies is potentially limited by the variability associated with individual baseline SCE frequencies. This investigation identifies and quantifies the major sources of preparative and biological variation ass
