The structure of the title complex, [CrCl 3 (C 9 H 21 N 3 )], contains a distorted octahedral chromium(III) centre. The facial tridentate N-coordinating 1,4,7-trimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane ligand and three chloride ions make up the first coordination sphere.

The X-ray crystal structure of the title compound, C 27 H 33 N 3 O 6 S 3 , a key intermediate in the synthesis of 1,4,7triazacyclononane and its functionalized derivatives, is presented. Two of the p-tosyl groups are coplanar with the macrocyclic ring, with the third pointing away from it.
