✦ Synopsis

The 6~3C values of whole body samples of the beetle Tribolium castaneum are closely correlated with the c5~3C values of the plant carbon in its diet. The correlation is always high for diets ranging from 100% C4 to 100% C 3 plant material. The degree of correlation is independent of the growth rate of the animals.

The temperature coefficient of the δ(13)C value over the temperature range 14 to 40° has been measured for plants with different photosynthetic pathways. C3 plants (6 species) had a temperature coefficient of-0.0125‰/(o), C3 plants (5 species)-0.046‰/(o), "C4-like" CAM (2 species)-0.13‰/(o) and "C3-

Hydrogen-isotope composition of leaf wat

The natural abundance hydrogen-isotope composition of leaf water (5~ 2~ and leaf organic matter (5~rg) was measured in leaves of C a and C 4 dicotyledons and monocotyledons. The 6~20 value of leaf water showed a marked diurnal variation, greatest enrichment being observed about midday. However, this
