- The basic meanings ascribed to the adverbs anu~thf~ and anu~lh(u)y~ by dictionaries, handbooks and translations are: a) "immediately"; b) "in (proper) order"; c) "properly, duly". Most scholars seem to derive c) from b). More or less outside the generally accepted interpretations lies Minard's translation of ~B. 3, 2, 2, 5 ... anu.sthydstam it6 bhavati "le soleil vient de se coucher" (Subordination, w Before discussing the text-places and the secondary literature on these terms, it may be useful first to give a survey of (some) interpretations proposed hitherto. The diversity of meanings and the lack of consistency in the translations are a justification for the present study. a) PD. : "unmittelbar, alsbald" (mentioned after "dabeistehend" as rendering of anu.sthfO; (s.v. anur "dabeistehend, unmittelbar" ("mit eigenen Augen" in perception); "sofort" (mentioned together with "nach einander"). M.-W. : "immediately, presently". Grassmann: "sogleich" (starting from the adj. "auf dem Fusse folgend"). Apte: (i.a.) "immediately" (after "in proper order, duly" and besides "immediate, direct").
