## Abstract Among the reaction products of cupric benzoate and ammonia a small amount of aniline is found. Using [1β^14^C]βbenzoic acid the position of the amino group is identified as __ortho__ in relation to the original carboxyl group.

Abstract
After thermal decomposition of cupric benzoate in the presence of deuterium oxide 43% of orthoβdeuteroβbenzoic acid can be obtained beside phenol. A radical mechanism for the air oxidation of benzoic acid to phenol under the catalytic influence of copper oxide should therefore be reasonable.
