โœฆ Synopsis

Rate constants for the vibrational deactivation of 12C'60( u= 1) by Hz and D1 have been measured in liquid D2 solution over the temperature range 25 to 35 K. The '2C'60 was vibrationally excited using a frequency-doubled CO2 laser and the resulting infrared fluorescence was analysed to yield the rate constants. The rate constants for the CO-H2 system were found to tie slightly below the extrapolation of gas-phase data and to increase slightly with falling temperature, while those for CO-D, were significantly lower than in the gas phase and were invariant with temperature.

The results are especially encouraging in the light of Konowalov's calculation [8]. He found that Hulth&n functions (integral transforms of 1s functions), which are somewhat better than k,(q) in the Z-electron+atomic case, reduce to scaled 1s functions in H2, except for larger R values. Since k, (v)

Vibration to vibration and rotation (WR) exchange occurs between CO and D, over the temperature range 340 K to 230 K, whilst at lower temperatures VT deactivation is dominant. Probabilities for these processes and for D, -D, deactivation are presented.
