โœฆ Synopsis

The observation of the dual luminescence of the title compound in very concentrated solutions in specially dried acetonitrile rules out water impurities as being at the origin of the anomalous emission. Water produces a quenching of the anomalous emission as well as a red-shift of the emission spectrum.

The dual luminescence of 4-N,N-dimethylaminobenzonitrile (DMABN) has been observed in 1-fluoropentane; only the normal emission is observed in hexane and in perfluorohexane. The solvent does not form exciplexes with DMABN and acts only by its dielectric stabilization of the twisted rotamer of DMABN.

A self-consistent reaction field (SCRF) method is used to calculate the absorption and emission spectra ofp-N,N-dimethylaminobenzonitrile (DMABN) and 6-cyanobenzquinuclidine (CBQ) in different solvents. The dual fluorescence of DMABN is discussed in terms of internal twisting of the excited state as

Excitation and dispersed fluorescence spectra and fluorescence lifetimes of jet-cooled 4-N,Ndimethylaminobenzonitrile (DMABN) and its van der Waals complex with methanol are reported. Neither the bare molecule nor the monosolvated complex exhibits the anomalous a\* fluorescence seen in polar solutio
