A laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) investigation of the jet-cooled dimer of the aromatic molecule N-ethylcarbazole is presented. The dimer behaves essentially as a perturbed monomer. The origin is shifted bathochromically some 606.8 cm-' relative to that of the monomer, and this can be explained in

✦ Synopsis
Excitation and dispersed fluorescence spectra and fluorescence lifetimes of jet-cooled 4-N,Ndimethylaminobenzonitrile (DMABN) and its van der Waals complex with methanol are reported. Neither the bare molecule nor the monosolvated complex exhibits the anomalous a* fluorescence seen in polar solution. Multiple solvation of DMABN with methanol resulted in a dramatic reduction in fluorescence quantum yield which can be interpreted in terms of formation of an a* state which is non-emissive under jet-cooled conditions.

The LIF spectra of (9-anthryl)dimethylaniline (ADMA) were obtained in a jet-cooled condition. The O-O band appears as a train of complex peaks ranging from 370 to 380 nm with decreasing intensity towards longer wavelength. The analysis of these peaks reveals that the equilibrium angle between the an
