The observation of the dual luminescence of the title compound in very concentrated solutions in specially dried acetonitrile rules out water impurities as being at the origin of the anomalous emission. Water produces a quenching of the anomalous emission as well as a red-shift of the emission spect
The dual luminescence of 4-N,N-dimethylaminobenzonitrile (DMABN) has been observed in 1-fluoropentane; only the normal emission is observed in hexane and in perfluorohexane. The solvent does not form exciplexes with DMABN and acts only by its dielectric stabilization of the twisted rotamer of DMABN.
