✦ Synopsis

During oogenesis the oocyte is arrested in meiosis twice. First at prophase I, then a second time at metaphase I in many invertebrates and in metaphase II in the vast majority of vertebrates. Meiosis resumption is triggered by the sperm. This article examines mechanisms that cause oocytes' arrest in meiosis and how spermatozoa help the oocyte to get out of this cellular predicament.

After almost a century of research, we have yet to solve the riddle of the mast cell. Whereas little was known about this cell for most of this time span, more facts have been gathered recently than seem to be reconcilable within a single unified concept of mast cell function. In order to do any sort of computer processing of the images produced by an electron microscope they have to be digitized. Therefore, any form of microscopy that involves computer processing has to be considered as digital microscopy independently of whether the original images were recorded on film

Molecular genetic studies have shown that the peripheral myelin protein 22 (PMP22) is a key gene in hereditary peripheral neuropathies and appears to be essential for the formation and maintenance of myelin in the PNS. Based on the amino acid sequence the predicted structure of PMP22 protein contain

## Abstract The most‐critical point of reproductive development in all sexually reproducing species is the transition from mitotic to meiotic cell cycle. Studies in unicellular fungi have indicated that the decision to enter meiosis must be made before the beginning of the premeiotic S phase. Recen
