โœฆ Synopsis

The facultative intracellular pathogen Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium faces multiple environments during infection, including different cell types as well as extracellular fluids. We propose that Salmonella ascertains its cellular location by assessing the Mg 2ฯฉ concentration of its milieu. A signal transduction system, PhoP/PhoQ, signals Salmonella its presence in a intracellular (low Mg 2ฯฉ ) or extracellular (high Mg 2ฯฉ ) environment, thereby promoting transcription of genes required for survival within or entry into host cells. The PhoP/PhoQ system is high in a regulatory hierarchy that controls other signal transduction systems that respond to different host cues, enabling the microorganism to determine its precise tissue and cellular location.

The elevation of intracellular calcium is a major effector of stimulus-induced physiological change in a variety of cell types. Such change is invariably complex and frequently involves the activation of gene expression. Calcium signals are often able to activate different subsets of genes within th

Knotted (Kn) genes are expressed within restricted domains of the plant meristems and play a key role in the control of plant morphogenesis. We have isolated the Knrelated gene Meis2 in mouse, which labels the lateral somitic compartment and its derivatives during early mouse embryogenesis and later

## Abstract Heterochromatin protein 1 (HP1) is a positive regulator of active transcription in euchromatin. HP1 was first identified in __Drosophila melanogaster__ as a major component of heterochromatin. Most eukaryotes have at least three isoforms of HP1, which are conserved in overall structure
