✦ Synopsis
Capillary liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) is usually performed using electrospray ionization. Atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) has not been used since the flow rates involved (1-10 µL/min) are too low to effect ionization with a standard APCI source. Using a 320 µm ؋ 15 cm column and an ion-trap mass spectrometer, interfacing for capillary LC/APCI-MS has been successfully carried out using a post column make-up flow. The system was evaluated using a mixture of eight β-blocker drugs in full-scan mode. Good chromatographic fidelity was obtained. Detection limits for timolol and labetalol were determined with selected-and consecutive-reaction monitoring (SRM and CRM). CRM gave the best signal-to-noise traces and detection at the low femtomol level was realized.

The performance of electrospray ionization and atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI) for the analysis of carotenoids was investigated. On our instrument, APCI produced spectra which were readily interpreted, and the positive-ion mode proved applicable to all of the compounds. The separatio
