โœฆ Synopsis

Electron transmission spectroscopy is utilized to determine the energies of the temporary anions of chlorobenzene and the di-and tri-chlorobenzenes. The ET spectra, the results of a simple model accounting for the resonance and inductive effects of the chlorines, and ab initio calculations all indicate that the splitting between the two anion states derived from the 2E2u ground-state anion of benzene is small in the chlorobenzenes. At higher energies the spectra display electron capture resonances.

In this communication we report calculations for the most probable molecular of chlorobenzene for its first singlet electronically excited state ('=B2) with respect to that of it-s ground state (eA1) from an analysis of the very high resolution VUFOUr phase electronic absorption spectrum near 2699A.
