Abstract
The ketonic fraction isolated from jasmine oil (Jasminum grandiflorum L.) by using Girard's «P» reagent does not contain any detectable amount of a ketolactone C~12~H~16~O~3~, as claimed by Naves & Grampoloff. Evidence is presented showing that the major component obtained in this way is indeed (‐)‐methyl jasmonate, i.e. (−)‐methyl cis‐2‐pent‐2′‐enyl‐3‐oxo‐cyclopentylacetate. At the present time, the ketonic compounds known to exist in jasmine oil are jasmone, methyl jasmonate, benzaldehyde, vanillin and methylheptenone.
