✦ Synopsis
Mono-isapropylidene ficntaerythritol. T h e method of preparation of Bijeseken et al. jr and L. Orthner , , using aqueous hydrochloric acid gave poor results, but this was improved by the use of dry hydrogen chloride. 5.0 g finely powdered pentaerythritol was added to 80 g dry acetone and dry hydrogen chloride was passed into the solution until the weight had increase by 1 g. The solution was then shaken mechanically until all the pentaerythritol had gone into solution (ca. 1 hr.) and then kept for 36 hr. It was then neutralised with alcoholic KOH and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The white residue was washed several times with cold benzene to remove di-isopropylidene compound and then crystallised twice from hot benzene to give 3.2 g crystalline product, m. p. 127OC.
