✦ Synopsis

The kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation of cupric sulphide have been studied in a fixed bed under isothermal conditions at different temperatures and partial pressures of oxygen, the upper limits being respectively 400°C and 0-1 arm. The reaction has been found to be autocatalytic in nature.

The following rate equation relating fractional conversion 0 with time t, deduced from the concept of nucleation involving branching and overlapping, is valid up to 0=0.95.

where k=0.977 rain-1 and m=0.43. This kinetic equation has also been derived independently from the general theory of gas-solid interaction by imposing certain reasonable assumptions.

A mechanism for the oxidation of cupric sulphide has also been suggested by studying the decomposition and the differential thermal analysis of cupric sulphide under various conditions and also by carrying out the thermodynamically feasible solid-solid and gas-solid reactions under the experimental conditions.
