✦ Synopsis

Advances are being made at an increasing rate towards an understanding of the role of cellular oncogenes in the normal and transformed cell. This review highlights a number of studies looking at the role of these genes in the carcinogenic process using in vivo and in vitro systems.

## Abstract Proto‐oncogene products may be multi‐functional proteins with various roles in cell differentiation as well as cell proliferation. The molecular biology of the gene products of three well characterized proto‐oncogenes (__c‐fos, c‐myc__ and __c‐src__) are described, and the roles of thre
