Docosahexaenoic acid -nutrient and precursor of bioactive lipids

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an important component of the brain and a major nutrient available in marine lipids. It is accumulated in the brain from a non-esterified pool of DHA bound to blood plasma albumin. 1-Lyso-2-DHA-glyceophosphocholine, also bound to albumin, is a more efficient source of brain DHA. The effect of DHA on cell redox status and its oxidation under the influence of lipoxygenase are discussed.
