✦ Synopsis
Abstract
Reaction of quinoline with chloroacetic acid yields N‐carboxymethyl‐quinolinium chloride (1) (75%), which is oxidised by K~3~Fe(CN)~6~ in the presence of a base to N‐carboxymethyl‐2‐quinolone (2) (70%). If 2 is heated in pure form at 300°, 1,3‐Bis(2‐quinolon‐1‐yl)acetone (4) (43%) is obtained; the expected N‐methyl‐2‐quinolone (5) is formed by decarboxylation of 2 in benzyl benzoate at 275° (34%).

## Abstract The synthesis of 1‐fluoro‐4,4‐di‐hydroxymethyl‐pentane (I) and its dicarbamate (II) is described. (I) is obtained by classical alkylation of methylmalonic ester with 1‐ bromo‐3‐fluoro‐propane and subsequent reduction with LiAlH~4~, of the fluorinated diester obtained. Treated with phosg
