✦ Synopsis

The fIo\vmg afterglow technique has been used to study the reactions of N2(A3z* U. v = 0.1) with some methylmercury and mercunc hahdes. Room temperature quenchmg rate constants and rate constants for production of HgX(F3 %z') were measured_ Evidence is presented that shows another electromc state of N 2, besides N*(A). can produce HgX<B) via dissaciahve evcltation reachons wth HgXz.

The rate constant for N,(A, v=O) deactivation by H has been measured by monitoring the decrease in the N,(A, v=O) -+N,(X, v=6) emission when H is added to a flow stream containing N\*(A). The value is found to be 5 x lo-" cm3 s-l, with an uncertainty of z 50%.

Nz(A. u = O-3) produced by the AI(~P~,~) + N2 reaction and detected by laser-induced fluorescence undergoes rapid, stcpwise vibrational relaxation but slow electronic quenching with added CH4 or CF4. Rate constants, k& of 1.5,3.1, and 5.0 X lo-l2 cm3 s-' are measured for Q = CH4, u = 1-3, and O-47,1
