✦ Synopsis

By monitoring the relative concentrations of mercury To atoms using absorption photometry, absolute rate constants have been measured for the excimer-forming reaction Hg (%) + H g + NZ -+ Hgz* + NZ and for the quenching of Hg (VO) atoms by ethane, propane, deuterated propanes, and nitrous oxide.

The cross section for quenching of Xe(3P,, 8.3 eV) metastabie atoms by thirteen simple molecules has been measured using the tlowing-afterglow technique. Except for Ha and N larger than for quenching of Ar(3Pa). For both Ar(3 2' the cross sections for quenching of Xe('Pa) are Pa) and Xe( Pa) the mag

The rate constants for the deactivation of Ar 3Pz metastables by 26 different molecules were measured and the corresponding cross sections calculated. The measurements were done in a "flowing'. afterglow system; the Ar 3p\* being produced by a low power microwave discharge. The concentration of Ar '

The quenching cross-sections for collision of Hg( 6 'PI ) with HZ or D2 are measured in the temperature range 300 < T< 700 K. They show a minimum at Tz400 K, suggesting the occurrence of two processes, which may be interpreted using calculated HgH, potential energy curves. These processes depend on
