✦ Synopsis

The quenching cross-sections for collision of Hg( 6 'PI ) with HZ or D2 are measured in the temperature range 300 < T< 700 K. They show a minimum at Tz400 K, suggesting the occurrence of two processes, which may be interpreted using calculated HgH, potential energy curves. These processes depend on the entrance channel. One, from the attractive 'B, state, would dominate at lower relative velocities. The other, from the repulsive OX+ state would dominate at higher kinetic energies. Each one provides both HgH formation and Ha excitation or dissociation. They correspond to the "rapid" and "5low" processes respectively, as observed by selective excitation of HgHz in a beam followed by detection of HgH.

The quenching cross sections for collision of Cd( 53P, ) with H, or D2 arc measured in the range 430 < T< 900 K. They show a threshold behaviour, increasing by one order of magnitude in the studied temperature range, and a marked isotopic effect, being about two times greater for Hz than for DZ.

Ra?e constants for the reaction of 0(3P) atoms with CaH4, CaHB and NO(M = NpO) have been measured over the temperature range 300-392°K using a modulation-phase shifi technique. The Arrhenius expressions obtained are: C2H4, k2 = 3.37 X 10' exp[-(1270 -f 200)/RT] liter mole-' see-', CJH~, kz = 2.08 x
