✦ Synopsis

The cross section for quenching of Xe(3P,, 8.3 eV) metastabie atoms by thirteen simple molecules has been measured using the tlowing-afterglow technique. Except for Ha and N larger than for quenching of Ar(3Pa). For both Ar(3 2' the cross sections for quenching of Xe('Pa) are Pa) and Xe( Pa) the magnitude of the quenching cross section for tire majority of the molecules is dominated by Iong range forces. The technique used for generating Xe13P2) was based upon the addition of Xe to a flow of argon metastable atoms which results in the transfer of energy from a large fraction of Ar metastabfe atoms to ground state Xe atoms. yielding Xe(3Pa) atoms.

Cross sections for the quenching of Nat3 'PI by N2 have been measured as a function of the initial relative kinetic energy of collision. The results indicate that the cross section smoothly changes by a factor of two over the energy range 0.08-0.35 eV.
