The only home Kathleen has ever known is an orphanage. But her eighteenth birthday is rapidly approaching, the age when she can no longer stay on there. Without a way to support herself or a place to live, her situation is disturbing to say the least. Out of desperation, she answers an ad to become a mail order bride.

Daniel is a widower with two young children. A tragic event has scarred the children emotionally. Melissa has nightmares and Michael stutters. He knows that his children need a mother so he puts an ad in the Matrimonial Times. Kathleen answers that ad.

Kathleen has always dreamed of being part of a real family, but once she arrives, she is dismayed to realize that Daniel and his children don’t seem to want anything to do with her. Daniel is aloof and the children seem afraid of her. She feels shut out by all of them, but when she tries to talk to Daniel, he doesn’t understand why she won’t just leave well enough alone.
