Against her father’s objections, Betsy has stubbornly left home for what she thought was going to be a prestigious job as a hostess at a posh restaurant. Knowing her father won’t allow her to come back home, she makes the bold decision to answer an ad and become a mail order bride.

John Masterson has come home penniless after working his claim in the California gold fields. But at least he still has the family farm to fall back on. Or does he? John has a secret that he is ashamed to admit to anyone, not even his very supportive sister Emily. He’d almost forgotten about the ad he placed for a mail order bride, back when he was still in California. But Betsy sounds like the right woman for him, so he sends for her.

But John has more than one secret. For instance, he neglected to tell Betsy that the farmhouse they were going to live in has burnt to the ground. Betsy hides her disappointment, and teasingly extracts a promise that he won’t keep any more secrets from her. But how can he keep that promise when he knows that the big secret he's keeping could change their lives forever?
