In normal somatic cells, the methylation pattern of DNA is stably maintained by DNA (cytosine-5-)-methyltransferase (DNA methyltransferase). Increased expression of DNA methyltransferase has been detected in many types of human cancer and has been thought to play an important role in tumorigenesis.
