The methylotrophic yeast Pichia pastoris has become a platform for producing heterologous recombinant proteins of pharmaceutical importance, thanks to its ability to reproduce posttranslational modifications similar to those of higher eukaryotes. The groups of Sang Yup Lee and Diethard Mattanovich present the first reconstruction of a genome-scale metabolic model of the P. pastoris type strain DSMZ 70382, PpaMBEL1254. It consists of 1,254 metabolic reactions and 1,147 metabolites compartmentalised into eight different regions, representing organelles.
