✦ Synopsis

The parameters of the electrocapillary maximum of mercury, ymsx and Emax, were determined in aqueous sodium azide solutions of concentration ranging between 0.05 and 2.0 M at 25°C. Two sets of measurements were performed. Tn one set, the nce was used as a reference electrode of constant composition, and in the other set measurements were made with respect to a Ag/AgN, electrode in the soIution under test. The amount of salt adsorption, I?=::, inO*I,O*3,0*5 and 1-O M solutions was computed. Comparison with previously reported values for chloride and bromide ions of same concentration shows that for azide ion salt adsorption is intermediate. The shift in E,,,.= us nce with azide ion activity is discussed briefly in relation to the significance of the potential &, at the plane of closest approach.

The distribution method was modified in several directions: petroleum ether was used as extracting solvent; the ratio of the volumes of the organic and aqueous phases was varied so as to keep the weight of the amine in the aqueous phase approximately equal to that in the organic phase; and the amine
