✦ Synopsis

The conformations and conformational dynamics of the two title hydrocarbons have been determined by lH 500 MHz NMR and molecular mechanics calculations; barriers for the Cope rearrangements are also reported.

The semibullvalene (SBV) molecule (1) has a rigid tricyclic stmcture (C, point group symmetry) and thus any cycloalkane ring fused to it at C(1) and C(5), such as occurs in 2 and 3, is forced to have an eclipsed or nearly eclipsed
