We describe a rapid and unequivocally distinct separation of arabinose, ribose and xylose from all sugars, except fucose, which are normally found in biological fluids. The method can be applied quantitatively, with reasonable accuracy, to amounts of up to So pug of each aldopentose.

Two mutants of PachysoZen tannuphiZus were isolated which produced considerably more acetic acid from several sugars than a wild type strain. Such mutants are of potential interest for the production of acetic acid rather than ethanol from lignocellulosic hydrolysates.
