✦ Synopsis

We examined 10 different melanoma cell lines for cellular expression and release of ICAM-I (CD54) and LFA-3 (CD58) and the influence of cytokines, including IFNcx, IFNy and TNFa. Cellular ICAM-I expression and density varies considerably between the melanoma cell lines. While IFNa has no effect on cellular ICAM-I (clCAM-I) expression, IFNy and t o a lesser extent TNFa can effectively up-regulate clCAM-I. Soluble ICAM-I (SICAM-I) is detected in the supernatants of all lines tested, release of SICAM-I correlates with cellular expression. LFA-3 does not much differ in i t s expression level on melanoma lines, and cytokines have little or no effect on i t s expression. Soluble LFA-3 is released by only 6 out of I0 lines. I t s release can effectively be inhibited by IFNy in all lines and by TNFa in one, while IFNa has no effect. These data show that expression and release of LFA-3 and ICAM-I differ between melanoma cell lines. This may be of importance for the interaction of melanoma cells with immune effector cells in vivo.

a-MSH, a proopiomelanocortin (POMC)-derived peptide, is known to be produced in the pituitary, the skin, and melanoma tumors and to possess many biological effects, mainly on melanocyte pigmentation and growth. Moreover, the melanocyte expresses adhesion molecules, including ICAM-1. The latter has b

Previously, we studied the surface expression of LFA-I (CDI Ia/CD18) and ICAM-I (CD54) in a panel of 16 human T-cell lines and found that those carrying HTLV-I pro-viruses expressed high levels of ICAM-I. Enhanced expression of ICAM-I was also seen in fresh leukemic cells from ATL patients. In the p

## Abstract Undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a remarkable entity among human tumors because of its constant association with the Epstein‐Barr virus (EBV). Malignant epithelial cells harbor the EBV genome and often express at least 2 species of latent EBV protein (EBNA1 and LMP1).

We investigated the expression of adhesion molecules of lymphocyte function-associated antigen-lu(LFAlu) and its ligand intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) on 74 well-characterized B cell lymphomas. The LFA-1 was expressed on B cell lymphomas (2 1/74; 28 per cent), but to a lesser degree tha
