โœฆ Synopsis

A sample of lead dioxide is reduced in the solid state in sodium hydroxide solution under conditions at which secondary reactions are negligible, so that the quantity of electricity passed is directly a measure of the reduced oxide. The inflexion observed in the cathode-potential-time plot is taken as an indication of the completion of reduction of the oxide.

The influence of the concentration of solution and the magnitude of the current on the accuracy of the determination has been investigated. The effects of particle size of the lead dioxide and of dissolved oxygen in the electrolyte have also been studied. The results obtained by the technique are within i 1 per cent of those obtained by iodimetry.

Earlier we advanced the hypothesis that the anodic corrosion of lead in sulphuric acid solution occurs as a result of atomic oxygen penetration through the layer of lead dioxide towards the metal. To substantiate the hypothesis, it is desirable to ascertain directly the possibility of a fast enough

LEAD dioxide electrodeposited on graphite substrate1 has been investigated in detail as anode for the preparation of organic\*\*8 and inorgani&'i compounds in this laboratory. In view of the interesting results obtained at this anode, it appeared worthwhile to determine the oxygen overpotential upon
