โฆ Synopsis
Earlier we advanced the hypothesis that the anodic corrosion of lead in sulphuric acid solution occurs as a result of atomic oxygen penetration through the layer of lead dioxide towards the metal. To substantiate the hypothesis, it is desirable to ascertain directly the possibility of a fast enough passage of oxygen through lead dioxide. We therefore carried out anodic polarization of one side of a pure lead membrane and measured the potential on the other side. In 1-2 days in the case of 4.5 M acid and in 2-3 h in the case of 0.05 M-, the potential on the polarized side sharply increased and exceeded the equilibrium potential value of the PbO,/PbSO,, H,SO, system.
