β¦ Synopsis
Commercial saponins contain mainly glycosides of triterpenes and/or steroids. The other components are free saccharides and organic acids. Their medicinal virtues depend on the glycosides' and the chemical structures of individual glycosides isolated from various plants have been widely studied2. However, there are few papers describing the quantitation of individual monosaccharides which constitute the glycosides in saponins.
By means of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), mono-and oligosaccharides have been separated and determined on amino-bonded column materials. For the detection of mono-and oligosaccharides in HPLC, the method based on refractivity measurement is most popular, but it is insensitive. On the other hand, post-column derivatization has excellent sensitivity and selectivity3.
This paper is concerned with the HPLC determination of individual monosaccharides which constitute the glycosides in commercial saponins, with the detection based on post-column derivatization.
