In the title compound, [Cu(C~12~H~6~N~2~O~2~)~3~](ClO~4~)~2~·4.5H~2~O, the Cu^II^ atom is in a distorted octahedral environment with unequal Cu—N distances, due to the Jahn–Teller elongation of the two Cu—N bonds in __trans__ positions. The crystal studied was an inversion twin..

✦ Synopsis
In the crystal structure of the title cocrystal, 2C 12 H 6 N 2 O 2 Á-C 2 H 6 N 4 O 2 , the diaminoglyoxime molecules are located on inversion centres, while the 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione molecules are located in general positions. Both molecules are connected through intermolecular N-HÁ Á ÁO hydrogen bonds.

A new preparative route to 5,6-diamino-l,10-phenanthroline is described which triples the isolated yields found in existing syntheses (67% vs. 22% from 1,10-pbenanthroline) and utilizes mild reaction conditions. The method is general and can even be used on chiral metal complexes containing the appr
