Bellows seals with split, replaceable faces Flexibox Sweden has been supplying seals of the FFSM type for water Jet propulsion units for more than ten years. The seal sizes have ranged from 80 to 300 ram. These seals have given good performance with excellent lifetimes.
However, to greatly facilitate changing out the FFSM seals when eventually required, the customer asked Flexibox to look at a split seal design. The Flexibox Saflex bellows seal incorporating split seal faces was chosen for initial trials.

The fluid pressure in compartment 17 then counteracts the pressure exerted in compartment 19, ensuring minimal physical contact between the rotor and stator sealing faces, This in turn decreases friction generation, which permits the sea
This patent provides details of a rotary joint that is designed for the transfer of low-temperature refrigerant with a minimal running cost. The joint has a series of bellows-type mechanical seals isolating the transfer passages. Patent WO/2009/122782 appears to provide more detail on the sealing sy
