migrates through the seal faces (13a & 13b) to compartment 17. The fluid pressure in compartment 17 then counteracts the pressure exerted in compartment 19, ensuring minimal physical contact between the rotor and stator sealing faces, This in turn decreases friction generation, which permits the seal to run cool and reduces seal face wear. The fluid pressure in compartment 17 is approximately one half of the pressure in compartment 19. Thus, the difference in fluid pressure creates air movement into and out of the seal, which in turn carries away any contaminants that may have entered the seal.
