โฆ Synopsis
In recent years a number of researchers have attempted to prove that alcohol (ethanol) can be produced from the fermentation of dietary carbohydrate by micro-organisms in the gut. It has been postulated that such activity can be sufficient to raise blood and breath alcohol concentrations significantly and so affect legal proceedings. Four cases are discussed and the evidence submitted examined. In the authors' experience to date none of the studies published supporting the theory have withstood close scrutiny.
