A gas chromatographic method for the separation and quantitation of the 20 protein amino acids is described using N-methyl-N(tert.-butyldimethylsilyl)trinuoroacetamide, with 1% tert.butyldimethylchlorosilane as catalyst, to prepare the tert.-butyldimethylsilyl amino acid derivatives. Alkylsilylation
