✦ Synopsis

Experimental

A freshly distilled solution of pivaloyl chloride (1.20 g, 10 mmol) in acetone (50 ml) was added dropwise to a suspension of potassium thiocyanate (0.97 g, 10 mmol) in acetone (30 ml) and the reaction mixture was refluxed for 30 min. After cooling to room temperature, a solution of 2,4-dichloroaniline (10 mmol) in acetone (10 ml) was added and the resulting mixture refluxed for 2.0 h. The reaction mixture was poured into cold water when the thiourea was precipitated as a solid.

Recrystallized from aqueous ethanol as colourless crystals (2.47 g, 81.0 mmol, 81%). IR (KBr) cm -1 : 3351 (free NH),
